Ontario Tornado, July 24, 2022 . We were bbq-ing w Ontario Tornado, July 24, 2022 . We were bbq-ing when our phones suddenly sounded an alert. We looked down at our screens, surprised by the words ‘tornado warning.’ In the sky, a bank of clouds rolled towards us in a squall line with a dense column of air descending towards the ground. Not at all like the movies so we didn’t know what we were seeing at first. The squall line swept across the sky at high speed with that dense knot of cloud heading northeast, away from us, towards Madoc. A torrent of rain, wind and lightning broke over us as we took shelter in the basement. We re-emerged when the noise of wind and rain died away. Fireflies danced through the air in eerie tandem with the lightning. Then the storm broke over us with renewed fury. We scurried back down to the basement and stayed there until it passed. Two days later, we drove along highway 7 to check on friends and witnessed the terrible devastation left behind by an F2 tornado - the same storm we’d seen moving towards Madoc on the night of the 24th.

Some friends of ours were downsizing, and unearthe Some friends of ours were downsizing, and unearthed this beautiful folding canoe. They asked us if we wanted it? At first, I said ‘no.’ We have too much stuff as it is but my crafty partner asked me to come and see it. As soon as I did, I was hooked. My ‘no’ pretty quickly turned into a ‘yes.’ It’s been impossible to book campsites during COVID and almost as hard to rent a canoe - or anything else, for that matter. So the opportunity to buy this one from our friends seemed like too good an opportunity to pass up. We don’t have a place to store a canoe but this one folds away into two canvas bags. Wild! And a little unbelievable.

Garden update, post-heat waves: The spring-plante Garden update, post-heat waves: The spring-planted crops continue to grow, while the winter-planted parsley and cilantro have started to bolt and flower- pretty much what you’d expect for this time of year. Besides using shade cloth, I planted all my greens and herbs in oversized containers. While I watered them every day when they were small and their roots were still close to the surface, I’ve switched to watering them deeply 3-4 times/ week. I think this is possible ONLY because chard, mesclun mix, parsley, sorrel and carrots are moderate feeders and they’re planted in such large containers, which are also protected by shade cloth. (I usually put this on at the end of June, as the temperatures rise and the sun gets more intense.) It’s possible for us to go away for a few days without worrying about watering and makes it easier for longer-term plant carers who don’t have to visit everyday to care for the garden. Photos 1&2 show Lucullus, Ruby Red and Fordhook Giant Swiss chard, all of which do well in the heat. Photo 3 shows a clipping of Ruby Red chard that has started to bolt - the only one in 16 plants. I’ve clipped it back in hopes that it will continue to produce new leaves. Photo 4 shows beautiful flowering cilantro, which doesn’t like heat at all. No worries. We’ll plant it again in early September. Photo 5 shows Belleville French sorrel, which also does well in the heat- especially in a part-shade location. Photo 6 shows a small container of flat-leaf parsley, which is starting to bolt beside newly-emerged seedlings.

Time for shade cloth! At this time of year, temper Time for shade cloth! At this time of year, temperatures routinely reach 40+C on our blazing hot patio. My strategy? Planting in very large, deep containers and employing shade cloth to keep my greens happy.
